Without adequate information about the moving industry and its processes, you will find yourself at the mercy of the transportation companies. It exposes you to potentially unfair prices, unsafe services, and fraudulent business practices.

Before you sign a contract or pay the deposits, it pays to ask your service provider the right questions. Here is a list of seven questions to ask your moving company before hiring their services for an interstate move

1. Do you have prior experience?

Ask the moving company whether they have handled a similar move in the past. For instance, if you’re moving to a high-rise apartment building or a big city, inquire whether the moving company can meet the job’s specific demands.

2. Do you they a good reputation?

Experience isn’t always proof of quality service. Check the company’s credentials and online customer reviews. Ask if they can provide you with details of their previous clients. The mover’s readiness to provide you with references is an indicator of their reliability and professionalism. You can also find reviews on The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA).

3. Are you licensed?

To avoid scams, ensure that the moving company holds a valid license issued by the United States Department of Transportation (USDoT). You should check their USDoT number on the FMCSA’s website.

4. Do you provide binding estimates?

A binding not-to-exceed estimate obliges the moving company not to exceed the quoted price. A binding estimate specifies the conditions under which the quoted price may increase. It helps you avoid last-minute surprises on a moving day.

5. Are there extra costs?

Enquire whether there may be additional costs associated with the following:

  • Long-distance or interstate moves
  • Local moves charged at an hourly rate
  • Excess shipment volume

6. How do you handle loss and damage claims?

Ask for the mover’s insurance policy and claims procedure to protect yourself against accidents and losses. It’s good to know about the company’s claim policy in advance so you can quickly receive a claims settlement in case of an unlikely event.

7. How long will the move take?

While local moves shouldn’t take too long, moving inter-state usually involves longer transit times. Be prepared to ask your moving company when you can expect to receive your items. It is good practice to maintain contact throughout the process. Find out if the company offers a tracking service for your cargo. A seasoned mover will appoint a representative to your move who will be available to answer your questions and provide you updates until you receive your belongings.
